Chapter 15

Logan

For the next four days, I don’t leave the flat. I don’t trust myself not to walk along Silver’s street, materialize in Covent Garden when I know she’s coming out of work.

Like a ghost, she haunts me. I see her gray eyes in the soft light of the moon, hear her sighs of pleasure in the rush of the trains outside my window. During the empty nights, I begin to wonder if memories are not just pieces of ourselves we leave behind in other people. If we don’t have to somehow break apart, leave a shard of our soul in another person’s heart. Maybe that’s why my life essence has always remained pure—no face, no moment I’ve ever wanted to remember. Until now.

After Silver’s text and call, I crush my phone to pieces in my fist. The temptation to answer is too great. I think back, trying to recall if I told her my address. A massive part of me hopes I did. The urge to see her is all-consuming. I burn with the insatiable delirium of a drug addict needing a fix.

On the fourth day of madness, a neighbor slips my post under the door. Among the junk mail is a simple note without an envelope, written in swirly black ink on thick, ivory paper.

I need you at the club. Ronin

I turn the page over, but those are the only words. I feel light-headed, clutching at the kitchen counter for support. Would Anastasia have told him already? Is he suspicious that the report of my happiness with a human has coincided with my mission? Or is it just a social call to see why I haven’t shown up to work these past few days? Either way, there’s no avoiding him.

It’s around seven by the time I make my way to Soho. The moon is full tonight, a glowing smudge behind silvery wisps of cloud. The streets are emptying out—the smartly dressed hurrying home from work, tourists chattering about their day as they head back to the safety and warmth of their hotels.

Outside the black door, I don’t give a moment’s pause to gather my thoughts. Whatever fate awaits, I want it over with as quickly as possible. I stare into the camera and wait for the dreaded clunk of locks as they rattle like old bones in the door.

The doorman isn’t Jordan tonight, but a new gentleman I’ve never seen before—thin and wiry, with rusty-brown eyes and hair slicked back with so much gel that it’s impossible to tell what color it is. I ponder if this subtle change is an omen, if this will be the last time I ever cross this threshold.

Surprisingly, he doesn’t ask for my name, but merely stands back against the grubby wall to let me pass.

I slip by like a ghost, moving briskly along the dark tunnel toward the main bar. Emerging into the sultry, low-lit room, the first thing I notice is that Ronin isn’t alone. A cold stab of fear pierces my heart when I see him sitting in a purple booth flanked by two other vampires.
